Man Up!

Pilates is often associated with women and more often than not you will find a majority of women in Pilates classes.  Does this mean Pilates does not work well for men?  Hardly! Pilates was invented by an incredibly strong German man, Joseph Pilates.  Joseph Pilates studied anatomy and developed himself as a body builder, a wrestler, gymnast, boxer, skier and diver.
Pilates has many benefits including strengthening the core, key to advancing performance in any sport.  Pilates is wonderful for releasing tight hamstrings and shoulders sore from golf or tennis swings.  Pilates can decrease back pain and improve overall health. Pilates connects your mind, body, and spirit, releasing stress.
According to British GQ ‘s article, Why Real Men Do Pilates,  “…While Pilates is great for weight loss, it can also increase your strength. I also managed to maintain a trim waist and muscular arms by following the three exercises below once a week. In short, it's the most hassle-free way to stay trim, toned and build muscle.”

Pilates Reformer

Less funky-looking than the Cadillac, and also invented by Pilates founder Joseph Pilates, the Reformer is a bed-like frame with a flat platform on it, called the carriage, which rolls back and forth on wheels within the frame. The carriage is attached to one end of the reformer by a set of springs. The springs can be adjusted to various levels of resistance as the carriage is pushed or pulled along the frame.
Body weight and resistance of the springs are what make the carriage more or less difficult to move. Reformers' parts are adjustable for differing body sizes and for differing levels of skill.
On the Reformer, exercises can be done lying down, sitting, standing, pulling the straps, or pushing the footbar or bar. In other words, the reformer can train myriad body parts in many different ways with just one relatively sleek piece of equipment.   Reformer classes are never dull as often new ways to use it are introduced!
Exercising on the Reformer promotes length, strength, flexibility, coordination and balance. The Reformer can be used for beginners to advanced Pilates students. These improvements lead to daily life benefits like better posture, graceful and efficient movement, and for many, relief from back pain.
Contact Easton Pilates to learn more about group and private Reformer classes.

The Cadillac

Many students have seen this funky-looking Pilates Cadillac machine in the studio but never actually used it. Pilates folklore states that Joseph Pilates created the prototype Cadillac to enable bed-ridden patients to exercise. His design was simple - a hospital bed with mattress springs attached to the wall. The design has certainly evolved over the years and and so have the exercises and stretches both new and experienced students can do on the Cadillac.

You can stretch and pull on the muscles and bones with the spring loaded bars and straps that stretch the body from head to toe. It also helps to assist or make the existing mat exercises more challenging.  You'll feel free and weightless! You can hang upside down Cirque de Soleil style!  You can isolate almost every muscle group on the machine - it is an excellent tool for breaking down motion into small pieces to restore correct motion patterns. Using the leg springs is one of the best ways to get seasoned runners to fully use their hamstrings.

The best way to experience this machine is in a private Pilates session.  Call Easton Pilates today to learn more.

A New Year

Happy New Year!! We are excited to begin another great year at the Easton Pilates Studio and we look forward to being an important part of your health and wellness program.  We are grateful for the many loyal students who have been with us for years.

As we all know, to get real benefits out of an exercise program, you have to do it regularly. Joseph Pilates put it this way:

"If you will faithfully perform your contrology [Pilates] exercises
regularly..., you will find your body development approaching the
ideal, accompanied by renewed mental vigor and spiritual
          enhancement."

If you are not already a student, please reach out today to set up a cutomized program with Judy. If you are a new student, welcome to the Easton Pilates Community! Let this year be your healthiest EVER!
