Are We Sitting Our Lives Away?

In the NY Times article: Get Up. Get Out. Don't Sit. by Gretchen Reynolds, she discusses recent studies which connect our sedentary lifestyles with loss of life expectancy.  Reynolds points out that even if you exercise each day, you are at risk.  The article recommends getting up periodically from your desk to move around, standing at times or even investing in a standing desk.  And, cutting down time in front of the TV.

Since we are Pilates devotees, we can also incorporate Pilates into our work lives if we sit at a desk for long periods of time. Some tips are:
  • Chair height should be such that your knees are 90 degrees
  • Your eyes should be level at your computer screen
  • Engage your core and don't slump your shoulders
  • Try switching your chair out for a large exercise ball and engage your core for balance
  • Keep your wrists straight when your type
  • Set a timer to go off every half hour and walk over to take a water break
  • Use a speaker phone instead of tilting your head into a phone
  • Take time to breath deeply while sitting
  • Remember your beautiful pilates posture and keep it going outside of class!
